If you’re dreaming of a short but memorable escape, this 3-day Madeira itinerary is perfect. Here’s everything you need to know about what to do in Funchal and nearby spots for a well-rounded, unforgettable trip.
Day 1 – Arrival, Cabo Girão and Local Flavours
Begin your Madeira travel with a visit to Cabo Girão, one of Europe’s highest sea cliffs at 580 metres. The glass-floored viewpoint offers jaw-dropping ocean and cliff views.
Back in Funchal’s centre, try a traditional bolo do caco sandwich, Madeira’s beloved flatbread, in a cosy outdoor café. Then wander through the historic Old Town, known for its street art and colourful doors.
Enjoy lunch at Café Teatro, a modern spot with a vibrant atmosphere. If time allows, head east to the Ponta de São Lourenço for dramatic volcanic landscapes.
For dinner, dive into Madeiran tradition with beef skewers on laurel sticks at Santo António, served with fried cornmeal and local wine.
Day 2 – Hiking, Porto Moniz and Fine Dining
Start your day with a nature hike. Madeira is famous for its levada walks and mountain trails, offering unique scenery and lush vegetation.
Then drive to Porto Moniz for lunch and a swim in the breathtaking natural volcanic pools — crystal-clear waters surrounded by black lava rocks.
Return to Funchal via the scenic north road, less direct but incredibly rewarding with panoramic views and charming villages.
Relax by your hotel pool before heading to KAMPO restaurant for dinner, where creative Madeiran cuisine meets contemporary flair.
Day 3 – Local Market, Cable Car and Basket Ride
Begin the final day with a visit to Mercado dos Lavradores, Funchal’s central market filled with exotic fruits, flowers and local delicacies.
Then take the Funchal cable car up to Monte, enjoying sweeping views over the city and bay. Visit the hilltop church and end your trip in style with the iconic basket toboggan ride, a fun and traditional downhill ride guided by two carreiros in white uniforms and straw hats.
